A tour of Stone Town and sightseeing: the slave monument, the slave market square, Freddie Mercury's house, the Anglican Church, the night market, the House of Wonders, and much more. The name Stone Town applies not to the entire modern city, but only to its old historical part. Its architecture is a bizarre mix of Eastern style with European and African additions, creating the city's unique flavor. Stone Town is the gateway to the island, its historical center, and also its only real city. It is home to 200,000 people. A fishing village once located here became favored by Arab slave traders who exported human cargo from Africa, and over time the settlement grew, featuring stone buildings: a fort, homes of wealthy merchants, mosques. Later, Zanzibar was colonized by Portugal, and for two centuries Stone Town continued to expand under European leadership. But by the late 17th century, Arabs began actively displacing them again; gradually, the Omani Sultanate established its rule over Zanzibar, and later a separate Zanzibar Sultanate was carved out of it. Then, in 1890, a British protectorate was established over it, which was only lifted in 1964. Around that time, old Zanzibar began to be called Stone Town, because unlike local villages, it had many stone buildings. Lunch. Next, you will visit a Spice Farm.
