The name Stone Town does not refer to the entire modern city, but only to its old historical part. Its architecture is a whimsical blend of Eastern style with European and African additions, creating the city's unique charm. Stone Town is the gateway to the island, its historical center, and its only true city. It is home to 200,000 people. The fishing village that was once located here was favored by Arab slave traders who transported live goods from Africa, and over time the settlement grew, with the construction of stone buildings: a fort, the houses of wealthy merchants, and mosques. Later, Zanzibar was colonized by Portugal, and for two centuries Stone Town expanded under European leadership. But by the end of the 17th century, the Arabs began to actively push them out again, and gradually the Sultanate of Oman established dominion over Zanzibar, and later Zanzibar became a separate sultanate. Then, in 1890, it came under a British protectorate, which was removed only in 1964. It was around this time that ancient Zanzibar began to be called Stone Town, as it had many stone buildings, unlike the local villages.
